BERFC U17 vs HITCHIN
By pete hofmann
Exciting first game for the academy U17s
And so the curtain raises on another season and what an entertaining game it proved to be . There was no expectation of a big win , Hitchin have always been a solid team and with 30 lads to our 17 fitness would prove to be the main difference between the 2 sides with Barnet running out of steam by the end and fior a brief period being down to 13 on the pitch with injuries . Fair dues to Hitchin for lending a player ( who gave it his all ) but Barnet just couldn't keep up with the injuries .
Barnet were slow out of the blocks with Hitchin scoring early .Barnet settled and put in some solid tackling particularly bt Tom Watt and Joe Gallagher to get the game back under control and it was only another lapse of judgement by one of our less experiences players that allowed Hitchin to score on the wing .
The game then settled into some structured play with both teams using pods to push up the field . There were a few handbag moments which is hopefully just down to too much Xbox over the holidays before Louis Mcardle pushed over the line for an excellent try bit with Harry Joseph out with a knock to the head and , Kacper out with a pulled hamstring and George S flagging Barnet were definitely looking on the back foot and began struggling to close the fresher Hitchin players down .
The second Half started well with a jubilant Tom Watt trademark try after some great pod work by Albert , Tommy and Tom . However with Tom off shortly afterwards Hitchin began to undo Barnet's defence with the final scorline not really representative of a very close game .
We can be confident that with 5 or 6 stringer players back in the squad the result could have looked very different and we look forward to meeting Hitchin again later in the season . Players of the day were the 3 Joes - Gallagher for a superb slot at 9 before his knee gave out , Adebayo for some good tackling and new Joe who joins us from Skolars and was coaches MOM for a solid stint at 14 .
Thanks also to Reece for being a good sport and bonding with the Hitchin Mascot .
