BERFC U17s vs Watford
By pete hofmann
Low numbers meant hard work for the Academy boys
With only 17 lads available and one of those playing their first game today was another hard slog but those boys on the pitch made the best of it . Historically we have always enjoyed our friendlies with Watford as we are likeminded and use the opportunity to try new positions etc but today those options were limited to one .
Watford have taken on some U18 players to bolster their squad and this meant they were probably the stronger side today even on the whole Barnet probably played better rugby . Both sides managed to keep their handbags stowed for the majority of the match with Mostyn Jenkins keeping a strict eye on the proceedings . The first half was evenly matched with a couple of superb runs by Harry Alexander who along with Albert and Tommy stood out today . Even minus some of our bigger players our scrum was solid with Ed making his debut at 8 .
Charlie Northrop although indifferent put in an excellent performance at 9 and Leevin Nigimbi kept Barnet in the game with 2 trademark tries .
However with some early injuries and Barnet down again to 13 the second half was more about firefighting despite a stirling performance from one of the Watford players stepping into the Barnet front row .
Other standout performances from Ted Parker who was everywhere and made some try saving tackles as well as scoring a superb hat trick , Jacob for Barnet's final 5th try down the wing but man of the match this week goes to Albert who gave it all for 80 minutes and received a fat lip for his troubles ! Next week we hope to be back to full strength against the mighty Fullerians .
