BERFC 26 - 10 Tabard

The forecast wet weather had arrived as we welcomed Tabard to Byng Road – or Tabardashers, as one of their parents called them – in reference to the number of Habs boys in their line up.

Tabard are another team who we’d done battle with many times in the past - and they'd had the upper hand over the last couple of years.

We knew they had plenty of pace in their back line – and once again it proved so, with Tabard making good inroads into the Barnet half at pace. Ten minutes into the game the Tabard fly half made a good jinking run, evading a number of attempted tackles, to open the scoring, 0-5.

The wet conditions weren’t helping either back line, with many spilled passes and knock-ons. As the half progressed the Barnet forwards began to gain some traction, and shortly before half time levelled the score, 5-5.

Two minutes into the second half another strong run from Barnet was halted just short of the line, but support was on hand to carry the ball the remaining 5 yards, and a good kick just in from the touchline added two more points to put Barnet ahead, 12-5.

Barnet’s tails were now up, and two tries followed in fairly quick succession – the first from a bullocking run, the second a superbly taken catch under pressure from a Tabard clearance - run straight back down the left wing, and touched down under the posts. Both tries were converted, bringing the score to 26-5.

Tabard fought back to touch down once more with ten minutes remaining, but as the rain continued to fall, that was that for the day – with the final score 26-10.

A good all round performance from the boys. Despite going a try down early on, we battled back and showed good commitment. We meet again in the league, in nine weeks’ time, at Tabard - when we expect them to come out all guns blazing.
