The first game of the season is always going to be a nervous one and I think all the coaches had butterflies yesterday especially having seen the Finchley squad . Its no secret that as local teams we have always been quite competitive and while our lads have become beanpoles the Finchley forwards have become giants .
An early try by Finchley caught our boys napping but the rest of the game was another story . The great work the coaches have put in over the summer immediately came into play with the lads drawing on their new strategies and thus began the Barnet comeback .
Central play was superb , the rucking was all solid with all the lads led by George Sturley getting stuck in . Finchley pressed us hard for the whole game but I don't think I saw one missed tackle today and the big Finchley forwards were not able to make any ground . Whilst the 9-10 channel was occasionally getting blocked the ball was consistently getting out cleanly by scrum halves Joe Gallagher and Jacob Hofmann and everyones hands were solid .
Some beautiful kicking and tackling by Tom Watt deserve a mention as does the superb try by Iketchi and Leevin whose pace was unmatched today .
All the boys should be proud , everyone who stepped on the pitch gave it their all and as a team the boys are really bonding which was great to see.
The coaches player of the day whilst a difficult choice , with George Fishpool certainly in the running for all round commitment , went to Reece who was absolutely absorbed in the game making every tackle , getting stuck in in the rucks , playing front row for the first time , and giving it 110%
great job lads !
