It was maybe unfortunate from the off that the Cheshunt coaches were expecting to play Bishops Stortford today which would have been an easier fixture for them . Having been bullied much of last season by B teams turning up bolstered by A team players ( last seasons game vs cheshunt arguably being one of those ) the Barnet coaching team were all in agreement that we should at no point play our strongest side and to that end we were honourable today .
Starting with our weaker 15 , no disrespect intended , and playing 2 new players in Oscar and Al the first half was a little chaotic . Without our stronger forwards Cheshunt pressed hard and were the stronger team in both the rucks and scrums . Kevin's main aim today was to focus on body position and that advice seemed to fall on deaf ears . There were precious few moments for either team in the first half , Teg Sing regularly securing the ball in the rucks and a few good runs by George Fishpool being the high points .
Rotating some of our more experienced players on in the second half meant Barnet took control while not overwhelming cheshunt . To maintain balance the coaches took off our strongest player and captain George Sturley and in order to respect Cheshunt's wishes county player Leevin Nigimbi was kept on the bench .
Cameron Mc Neil playing out of position at 8 however secured the scrum and some aggressive runs by Ross Forrester , George Fishpool , and Ted Parker ( including a beautiful short kick to score ) meant Barnet edged in front . That said Cheshunt kept the pressure on , and were unlucky not to score on 2 occasions .
There were once again a couple of ugly moments after a careless tackle by one of our new players and Barnet would do well to remember that the stronger player will walk away from confrontation .
Player of the match went to Parsa Mohajer for some excellent tackling , great comms and most of all for keeping his cool as captain during the second half despite being on the receiving end of some horrible behaviour in the rucks . Thanks to the Cheshunt boys for making us feel welcome in the clubhouse afterwards and reinforcing the values of the sport leaving the aggression on the pitch .
Good job Barnet , 5 out of 5 .
