TRAINING AT KING GEORGE V PLAYING FIELDS BEHIND FURZEFIELD LEISURE CENTRE POTTERS BAR
It's a simple game really.
1. You are an actor, not a spectator. No player should be walking anywhere.
2. The non-carrying arm goes into contact first.
3. Run straight and fix a defender. That means attack their inside shoulder.
4. In the tackle, put your leading foot as close as possible to the target: same shoulder, same foot.
5. You are always lower than your opposite number in the contact.
6. Don’t make the tackle easy, use footwork. Run at doors not walls.
7. In the maul, move the ball to the back of the maul quickly.
8. Get beyond the contact, imagine / visualize the defender 2m back.
9. Accelerate onto the ball.
10. When going to ground, "score a try first" (ball under chest) then get into position to offer the ball to your support. This avoids easy turnover ball.
11. When in doubt, run straight and stay on your feet.
12. In defence, know where your opposite number is. Don’t just look to where the ball is.
13. Always be ready to take the ball.
14. Communicate, communicate, communicate and intelligently.
15. Playing rugby is about attitude. Be positive.
