Finchley brought two teams of 12 from their squad of 35-40 boys.

Even though one or two boys were away or injured we fielded two teams.

In the first game our less experienced team gave an excellent account of themselves. Against a very experienced Finchley team the boys got stuck in straight away. The tackling and passing was good. It was real end to end exciting stuff. We played three games in all, one won, drew one and lost one. Barnet and Finchely were very balanced, the games could have been won by either team with only one or two tries seperating the teams.

Special mentions for Jacob Hofmann and Joe Gallagher, but everyone contributed extremely well with tries from Joe Gallagher, Jacob Hofmann, Myles Isaacs and Ted Parker.

In the more experience team games we competed well at the breakdown and eventually got parity, at least, at the scrum. We were unlucky to lose 1-2 in the first game - probably due to the referee (me!)who was unsighted and did not award one Barnet effort...sorry, team.

In the second match we had the measure of them and we got gradually stronger and were again unlucky, this time to only get a 2-2 draw.

Special mentions go to Jude Daniels-Smith and Charlie Gray for strong running and good handling, George Fishpool for his all round commitment and Alexander Walker for playing with a "dead-leg".

The emphasis of the week was making our "first up" tackles and tackling featured heavily in the awarding of the The Player of the Week trophies. One went to Tom Watt for consistent effective tackling and one to Joe Gallagher for his all round performance and ground making. Well done, boys!

In fact, well done to all the boys who are beginning to play an exciting and effective brand of rugby, with everyone getting the tackling "thing", and our recycling at the breakdown improving. We are also showing signs of good back play.
